Choral/Vocal Studies

The study and performance of the finest of the choral repertoire enables our students to experience, under the guidance of conductor/composer Dr. Harrell C. Lucky, the excitement and inspiration of such works as Poulene's Gloria, Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Dave Brubeck's Fiesta de la Posadas, and Mozart's Requiem. Our ensemble members have been able to work closely with such eminent composers and directors as Vincent Perishetti, Lukas Foss, and Gregg Smith as part of our annual Festival of the Arts series.

Dr. Harrell C. Lucky has been head of choral studies at Eastfield College since 1974. After receiving his doctorate in composition from the School of Church Music, Southwestern Baptist Seminary, Dr. Lucky did post-doctoral studies at the Academy of Music in Vienna under Gunther Theuring and Ferdinand Grossman, where he was chosen for special studies with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. A specialist in large works for chorus and orchestra and a veteran of dozens of major performances with the Eastfield College Chorus, the Preston Hollow Masterworks Chorus, and as Conductor/Artistic Director of the Irving Chorale, he is known as a powerful and expressive interpreter of the choral repertoire. His compositions for chorus have been published by Lawson-Gould Music Co. of New York and Abingdon Press. He was commissioned by the Republican National Committee in 1984 to compose a major work for chorus and orchestra for the Republican National Convention Presidential Concert. At Eastfield, Dr. Lucky directs the College Chorus and Chamber Singers, and teaches courses in music theory, music history, and music appreciation.

Ron MontgomeryRonald Montgomery received his Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from S.M.U. and his Master of Music in vocal performance from West Texas A&M University.  Locally he sang with many area orchestras in oratorios, such as Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Mozart’s Requiem.

In 1981 he went to Italy for further study, and began a performing and teaching career.  He performed in operas and concerts over the next 22 years, and taught privately.  Highlights of his stay in Italy were several recordings for the Fonit-Cetra label and performing Bernstein’s A Quiet Place at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala.

A native of Dallas, Texas Mr. Montgomery has spent most of his professional life in Italy as a concert and recital singer, as well as taking on operatic engagements. His repertoire ranges from eighteenth century Neapolitan comic opera to modern works by Bernstein and Lo Vetere, as well as the more standard fare of Verdi and Puccini.

During the Verdi centenary celebrations he was chosen to sing in a series of concerts of Verdi’s little known song literature, not a small honor considering he was a foreigner singing the works of Italy’s most beloved musical son.  He was also chosen twice as tenor soloist for concerts at the Verdi Rest Home for retired musicians during these same Verdian celebrations.

In 2003 he returned to the Dallas area where he teaches voice and singer’s diction, and conducts The University Singers at the University of Texas at Arlington, as well as voice at Eastfield College.

His concert and recital repertoire goes from the Baroque masters, such as Bach, Handel and Scarlatti, through Beethoven and Schubert to the impressionists Fauré and Duparc and right through to the twentieth century works of Respighi, Pizzetti and Stravinsky.
