Welcome and Introductions

The Construction Team council convened on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at 8:53a.m.  Dr. Lindle Grigsby welcomed the members.

Learning Studios

Dustin Moore with Rogers-O’Brien reported the masonry work on the west side of building has begun.  As the brick work is completed, going South and around the building, the stucco workers will begin following them.  The roof trusses’ has begun and will match the existing buildings on campus.  Interior framing on the first floor is basically complete and work has begun on the second floor.  The Learning Studios building is scheduled to be complete by mid to late November 2008.  The official opening ceremony will probably be held January 2009, no date has been selected.

Dan Arrowood reported they are working closely with Rogers-O’Brien.

What information is needed to move forward?  Dustin Moore reported they have samples of “stained concrete” and will need input from Eastfield College Construction Team Members.

Center for Child and Parent Studies

Johnny Booth - Booth Architects and Dan Arrowood with HKS reported they expect site plans to be finalized by Friday, July 11, 2008.  The architectural site plans have been approved by the city of Mesquite.  The plan review is contingent upon the engineering review.  Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) meeting will be held Friday, July 11, 2008.

What information is needed to move forward?  No additional information is needed at this time.

Pleasant Grove Campus

Brad Napier, with Adolfson & Peterson reported the foundation pier drilling will begin on Monday, July 14, 2008.  Water and sewer lines are being installed.  Grading for the drives and parking areas is almost complete so this area can be framed for concrete.

What information is needed to move forward? No additional information is needed at this time.

Workforce / Criminal Justice Facility

Halff Associates reported the site plans are “nearly” complete.  The first review period has been executed.  The case manager with the city of Mesquite will follow-up in approximately two weeks on the plans that have been submitted.  The parking lot configuration is currently under discussion.

Susan Hansen reported they are working with A&P on a tentative schedule to discuss the water and sewer trench lines.  Dave Littleton reiterated the need of reminding the city of Mesquite about the “expedited review plans”.

Groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for late July or early August 2008.

What information is needed to move forward? No additional information is needed at this time.

Technology “T” Building Expansion

Michael Johnson with Johnson McKibben Architectural firm reported 50% construction drawings have been submitted and pricing received.  95% drawings are to be delivered by July 29, 2008.  The site plan has been submitted to the city of Mesquite, a separate re-plat of an easement is required because of encroachment into the easement.

What information is needed to move forward?  No additional information is needed at this time.

Utility and Infrastructure Update

Dave Littleton with Halff Associates reported the revision to water line 3-plan will be submitted to the city of Mesquite today.  Will begin work upon approval from the city.

Art Sykes reported the contractor will attempt to have the Oates drive entrance assessable by Monday, July 14, 2008.  This is contingent upon building materials, i.e. concrete etc. being delivered on time.  Additional scheduled dates:

  • Inspection on phase three is scheduled for Friday, 7/11/08
  • Parking lots E3, E4 & E5 will be closed 7/14/08 through 7/25/05 as construction proceeds northward.
  • Water line to be completed in 6-8 weeks.
  • Contractor will work this weekend to repair road at E1 parking lot

What is needed to move forward?  No additional information is needed at this time.

Perimeter Road

Representatives from Criado & Associates were not present at today’s meeting.  No additional information was reported since last month’s meeting.  A meeting is scheduled for next week with Craido and with Dave Littleton from Halff Associates on the La Prada entrance design.

Adaptive Remodel

Dr. Lindle Grigsby reported “work is continuing with the remodeling list from Eastfield.  The architects and contractors are to complete their contract negotiations with the Bond Program Managers this next week and be ready for another walk through to see the nature of the changes since their last preview.  Eastfield is still finalizing the list of remodeling projects.”

Parking Expansion

Dr. Lindle Grigsby reported Eastfield College expects to add approximately 150 to 200 parking spaces to be located near the Workforce/Criminal Justice and Center for Child & Parent Studies buildings.  Some parking spaces will be placed in the west area of campus.

Furniture Team Visits

Jack Thiehoff reported all furniture have been selected for the Learning Studios building.    Manufacturers have been notified of the pending orders so they can begin assembling the materials needed and staffing for the order that will be coming.

Dr. Lindle Grigsby and Susan Hansen will meet with Jack Thiehoff and Lucinda Gonzales immediately after today’s construction meeting to discuss the overall order.

Key Dates

(Source of information provided by Dr. Lindle Grigsby)

  • Road closures are of utmost importance.  We must communicate with everyone to avoid as much confusion as possible.
  • Water trenching may be on-going on August 25, the first day of fall classes
  • There will be a separate groundbreaking ceremony for all three (3) of the new buildings being constructed.  This will enable us to target special audiences to invite according to the nature of the offerings that will be provided from these new facilities.  No definite dates have been established because of city approvals and contractor negotiations that are still on-going.  These ground breakings will probably occur between the middle of August and the first of September.
  • The Grand Opening for the Learning Center building will probably be in January.
  • As soon as the sewer line trenching passes through the east parking lots then the trenching for the 16” water line connection will begin.  This work will go from North to South, from behind the “T” building to the water lines already installed just South of the cemetery entrance off Motley.  Every effort is going to be made to have this work completed before August 15, the first day of classes for the Fall semester, but there is no assurance we will meet that deadline.  Dates will be announced by the contractor at a meeting next Wednesday, July 16.

Open Discussion

  • Dr. Lindle Grigsby reported road closures will impact the flow of traffic entering the campus from Motley Drive during periods of construction.  He reiterated Dr. Carol Brown’s request for Eastfield College faculty and staff to postpone large campus events while the construction project is underway.
  • Lucinda Gonzales asked if it were too soon to discuss permanent signage in the Learning Studios building.  Dr. Grigsby responded “yes”.
  • Dr. Lindle Grigsby commented that the original room numbers assigned to rooms in the Learning Studios building have changed.  The new room numbers should not impact the furniture configuration; the design of the rooms did not change, only the numbering system.
  • Mike Marrero with District Service Center (DSC)-DCCCD reported:
    • The new feeder cabling will not interfere with the “system network”.
    • After completion of the new construction project they will began work on the “A” building administration cabling project.
    • Collaboration between DSC Facilities and the current construction project managers will help facilitate the process
