Eastfield Hosts Science Lecture 

Dr. Johnnye M. Jones

(Mesquite, TX) – Eastfield College’s National Science Foundation Science Talent Expansion Program and the Eastfield Science Club will host Dr. Johnnye M. Jones in C118 on October 24, from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in a lecture series titled “On Becoming a Scientist.” 

Dr. Johnnye M. Jones currently serves as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement & Development at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. Prior to her appointment in 2000, Dr. Jones served as the Dean of the School of Science at Hampton University. While at Hampton, she advanced rapidly from assistant professor in biological sciences to endowed university Professor of Biology. She served as director of several special programs including the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC), and the Hampton University/Howard Hughes Summer Enrichment Program.

Dr. Jones has a number of publications to her credit and has spoken in many venues throughout the country. She has also served as a consultant to the National Institute of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education.

Dr. Jones received a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University in biology and mathematics. She earned the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Atlanta University. Postdoctoral studies were undertaken at Brookhaven National Laboratory in electron microscopy and cell biology. Further study was conducted at the UpJohn Company in the areas of biotechnology and plant molecular genetics. In the area of community service, Dr. Jones provided leadership for the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast, Girls Incorporated on the Peninsula and numerous other outreach activities for Pre-College students. She coordinated the Annual Student Research Symposium and the Annual Health Careers Symposium at Hampton University engaging high school and undergraduate students. 
                                                                                                
National recognitions, honors and awards include: NIH National Recognition for Contributions to EARDA program, March 2003; GIANTS IN SCIENCE AWARD, QEM Network, Washington D.C., February 2002; 1999 Harvard Summer MLE Leadership Institute Award; 1997 Presidential/ Whitehouse Award for Mentoring in Science, Mathematics, & Engineering, and the Extramural Associates Appointment- Office of the Director/NIH in 1995.
