Eastfield College Opens New Community Campus

The dust has settled. No more construction vehicles will be coming and going at 802 S. Buckner Blvd in Pleasant Grove. Instead, cars or buses or even people on foot will come to this site to register for classes at the new Eastfield College Pleasant Grove Campus. After several long months of building – and much to the delight of the enthusiastic support of residents, businesses and area officials – the campus is now ready to welcome new students.

Pleasant Grove CampusA grand opening ceremony for the new facility will be held on Mon., Aug. 3, from 2 to 7 p.m. Representatives from the City of Dallas, Southeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce and neighboring chambers, the Dallas Independent School District and area school districts, along with local organizations and churches, have been invited to attend.

Opening remarks will be given by: Eastfield President Jean Conway; Dallas County Community College District Chancellor Wright Lassiter; Pleasant Grove Executive Director Javier Olguín; members of the DCCCD Board of Trustees; Sen. Royce West; U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson; and Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. Entertainment throughout the afternoon will include: the EFC Jazz Ensemble/EFC Children Guitarists; Soles Mariachi Band; The Way of Truth Church Choir; Kindergarten Folklorico Dancers; Guitar Ensembles with James Scherffler; St. Augustine Church Choir; AA Dancers; Pastoral Juvenil Band and Eastfield College Student Performers.

The Pleasant Grove Campus will provide a variety of education and training services such as workforce training programs; continuing education (CEUs) classes; ESL and ESOL classes; GED training; college readiness courses in reading, writing and math; and freshman–level credit courses.

The new 45,000-square-foot facility will house both the Southeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce and the Southeast Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce offices. The Wilkinson Center, a non-profit organization that serves the working poor who live in east and southeast Dallas, also will provide adult education classes at the campus. These classes are Pre-General Educational Development (Pre-GED), English as a Second Language (ESL) - Beginning Literacy, CareerWorks (employment readiness program that incorporates career planning and job search strategies) and Introduction to Computers. The Wilkinson Center will offer comprehensive case management services that focus on overcoming barriers to continued education with the goal of helping students graduate with an associate degree.
