Biology Class is a Walk on the Beach

(Mesquite, TX) – Eastfield College is offering Biology 1409 as a field studies course to Port Aransas, Texas, May 18 – 22; the course consists of a self-paced lecture with laboratory exercises conducted primarily on location. While in Port Aransas, students will take part in the following activities:

  • Visit the University of Texas Marine Science Institute and collect/ observe various representative vertebrate and invertebrate organisms aboard the marine research vessel
  • Boating to offshore islands  
  • Seining/ sieving for various marine organisms
  • Shell collecting/ beach combing at St. Joseph’s Island
  • Behind-the-scenes tour at the Texas State Aquarium  
  • Tour/ hike Aransas Wildlife Refuge
  • Collect/observe various marine organisms at the following locations: Sandy Beach, Aransas Wildlife Refuge, Jetty, Port Aransas Birding Area, Salt Marsh/ Mud Flat, Hans Suter Birding Area, and St. Joseph’s Island.

The lecture portion of the course is self-paced with recitations available. There will be a several pre- and post-trip meetings; dates/times to be announced.

FIELD TRIP EXPENSE: $275. A nonrefundable deposit of $150 is due by Friday, May 2. The
$125 balance is due by Friday, May 16. Class enrollment is limited to the first 16 students that have paid their deposit.
