ESL: Communications Improvement I - COMG 1000 $95.00
Prerequisites: A certificate from Literacy Workplace Skills
This is the beginning course in English as a Second Language for non-native speakers. Emphasis will be on developing students’ basic speaking skills to create a working vocabulary of up to 600 words. Simple grammatical structures and writing skills are introduced. Basic reading, writing and math skills required for entry into the workplace are also introduced. Presentation of industry related basic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Textbook: World Link I ( Heinle ).

This course is for people who can speak, read and write basic English. Conversational, listening, reading and writing skills are further developed to provide the student with a functional vocabulary range of 1200 words. This is an intermediate level course for the non-native speaker seeking to refine the acquired language skills in the areas of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. More complex grammatical structures and writing activities lead to a 2200-word vocabulary. Reading, writing and math skills required for entry into the workplace will also be developed. Spelling, punctuation, usage and sentence construction will be stressed along with vocabulary building and composition. Reading, writing and math skills required for entry into the workplace will also be developed. Focus on comprehending challenging industrial and job-related material. Emphasis on industry-related vocabulary development and skills acquisition. Textbook: World Pass Upper-Intermediate (Heinle). In addition to the current curriculum, students will examine the assimilation of Asian-American and Hispanic cultures.
