Program Description

Driven by its mission, Eastfield College is committed to providing excellence in teaching and learning. Central to its mission is the advancement of student success in a learning environment that addresses the particular needs of the student population. The design of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), Year One: ENGAGE, aligns with Eastfield’s commitment of educational excellence by enhancing the learning experience and engagement of first-year students.

Year One: ENGAGE is the result of a systematic process involving a comprehensive review of literature, analysis of institutional effectiveness data, norm-referenced and standardized student and faculty surveys, college-wide discussions, and student focus groups. Thus, founded on existing research-based practices and the particular characteristics of the student population, the goal of the QEP is to advance the success of first-year students by enhancing their social and academic engagement.

The central component of Year One: ENGAGE will offer first-year students the opportunity to enroll in a learning community consisting of two to four gatekeeper courses with the lowest success rates: Learning Framework, English, History, and Mathematics. Year One: ENGAGE Learning Communities will strive to create an environment supportive of peer relations and collaboration across disciplines. Faculty sharing the same cohort of students will also facilitate faculty collaboration in identifying specific student needs, creating proactive measures, and making sound decisions to improve learning outcomes.

In addition to this, the Academic and Cultural Enhancement (ACE) program will provide students with academic support while promoting their engagement with campus services, instructional content, and college life. Students who participate in ACE will earn college credit upon successful completion of selected tasks supportive of three vital aspects of first-year student engagement: (a) mentorship, (b) enhanced instruction, and (c) college events. Data of student participation in ACE will be collected electronically for awarding the corresponding credit hours.
