Role of Eastfield Faculty in Academic and Institutional Governance

The DCCCD and Eastfield College recognize the unique role faculty play in both academic and institutional governance.

While the District Office of Educational Affairs is charged with compliance with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) rules and regulations related to curriculum, it is the purview of faculty to develop, revise and evaluate the curriculum. Annually, faculty have a responsibility to participate in district-wide curricula committees to ensure course offerings are appropriate and current. Faculty are responsible for the development of new course offerings as well as revising or eliminating courses no longer viable. New workforce development/technical program proposals must include faculty involvement. In addition, faculty have the primary responsibility for the academic quality within the curriculum and for evaluating the effectiveness of courses being taught. This is particularly important for the DCCCD Core Curriculum since THECB requires the core be evaluated on a regular basis.

While policy decisions rest with the elected Board of Trustees, faculty are to be involved at all levels within the college and district in the decision-making processes related to planning, budget development, and academic policies. While much of the on-going work of the institution may take place through faculty involvement in a variety of college and district committees, the faculty also have the opportunity to participate through the Faculty Association both at the college and the district levels. All proposed policies dealing with the academic affairs of the district are considered by the Faculty Council, composed of presidents of the seven college faculty associations, prior to being submitted to the Board of Trustees for adoption. In addition, all other proposed policies are shared with the Faculty Council prior to submission to the Board of Trustees for adoption. The district Faculty Council interacts with the DCCCD Chancellor and the Chancellor’s Cabinet through regularly scheduled meetings. Each college administrative structure actively involves the college faculty association in college decisions through regularly scheduled meetings. At Eastfield College, the Faculty Association President meets once a month with the President and serves as a member of the Instructional Council which meets on a monthly basis.
