Institutional Policies/Classroom Management

Emergency Procedures

Emergency phones are located throughout the campus. All instructors should be aware of the location of the nearest emergency phone to each of their classrooms.

Steps to take in all emergency situations which threaten life, limb or property:

  1. Contact College Police at x8333 and
    1. give your name
    2. give the nature of the situation, including presence of weapons, if any
    3. givethe exact location, including the building name and room number
    4. give the names of persons involved, or a description
    5. give a call-back telephone number, if applicable
    6. return to emergency situation if feasible
  2. College Police will report to the situation and follow through.
  3. Documentation and follow-up shall be done by College Police and other appropriate divisions.

Medical Emergencies

If you witness an accident or medical emergency (i.e., if someone falls, faints, has a seizure, or suffers an injury or sudden illness) follow this procedure when the Health Center is open:

  1. Call the Health Center at x7190 or College Police at x8333.
  2. Give the following information:
    1. your name
    2. what happened
    3. the exact location of the incident, including the building name and room number.
  3. Stay with the victim until assistance arrives, and most importantly, DO NOT MOVE THE VICTIM. If the injured person attempts to move, encourage him/her to remain still until appropriate personnel can assess the situation. Basic first aid directs that the victim should never be moved unless it is absolutely necessary for safety reasons. These efforts are directed toward preventing further injury.
  4. Send a guide to the closest entrance to meet the nurse.
  5. Because of the risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens, avoid touching any blood or body fluids. All blood or body fluid spills must be cleaned by Facilities Services, x7688.
  6. Decisions to call outside help must be made by the Health Center or College Police.

Procedures for emergency response when the Health Center is closed:

  1. Call College Police (8388)
  2. Give the location and cause of accident.
  3. Keep calm and reassure the victim.
  4. Stay with the victim and do not move him/her.
  5. College Police will make arrangements for emergency transportation.

Inclement Weather/Class Cancellation

In case of inclement weather, Eastfield faculty/students are asked to listen to KEOM – FM Radio Station (88.5). In partnership with Mesquite Independent School District, Eastfield College Administration will notify KEOM immediately after a decision is made to cancel classes on any given day of inclement weather. Faculty/students may also monitor local television and radio stations.

Classroom Cleanliness/Food & Drink Policy

Except where otherwise determined by a faculty member, food and drink are expressly prohibited in classrooms and labs.

The instructional staff is responsible for setting policy regarding the use of food and drink in each class that they teach. Faculty will include a statement in course syllabi detailing their policy. The faculty member and students in the course are responsible for observing the established policy throughout the semester.

Lost and Found

The College Police Department (C-140) maintains a storage area for “lost and found” items.
