Professor Robert Erwin
I,
Bob Erwin, arrived in Dallas via Florida, New York, Canada and Wisconsin.
Much of this "trip" was done on a BMW motorcycle, as I pursued
my first love, theatre. One of the perks of a career in theatre is that
it allows one to travel. I have certainly done my share. If theatre
would not provide a ticket or means, then I put out my thumb and hitched.
Eight months were spent hitchhiking through Europe traveling from Lapland to
Spain, Italy to Austria. Washing dishes in Berlin and working on a farm
in France earned me traveling money. Theatre has also offered many opportunities
to travel in this country and Canada. In 1972, I was selected to
participate
in a theatre conference which included stays in Poland, the DDR, as well as
Moscow and Leningrad. The time shared with actors and directors from the
various countries allows me to bring a broad perspective to my students and
enhance the learning experience.
If there is a second love in my life, it has to be my BMW motorcycle.
I've owned three of them and used them to travel over 100,000 miles.
By the end of the summer of 1998, I will have covered the lower 48 states on
one. A favorite summer was spent traveling from Dallas to northern Wisconsin
and on to Colorado Springs for the 1977 National BMW Rally. I then traveled
back to Wisconsin through North and South Dakota, down to Florida
and
back to Dallas. This boy sure likes to ride!
There are three step sons who take an active part in my life. Ben, Jim and Adam came into my life when they were just "sprouts." Not only have they grown, but they have come to fill my life with wonder, awe, excitement and joy. Ben plays the sax and loves jazz. Jim loves to ride the motorcycle almost as much as I do. And, Adam wants to make money, not when he grows up, now.
One of the things I feel strongly about is that my students have
a right to see me work. Why would a young person want to study an art
with someone who doesn't participate in that art? Consequently, I made
the decision long ago that I would audition around town.
I
go through the same process that my students experience. By doing so,
I can share my experiences with my students and better relate to their experiences,
doubts and fears. At the same time, my students can come see me work,
see that I apply the same techniques that I teach in class. So you may
have seen my smiling face and baldhead at The Undermain, Pegasus, Addison, Theatre
Three, and Garland Summer Musicals. You may have caught me in commercials
if you lived in the right part of the country at the right time. I also
believe that I should offer whatever expertise I may possess to the community.
So, I serve on the Board of the Garland Summer Musicals, and try to give back
some of the fun and joy I receive. That's Uncle Bob.
