Legal assistants perform various tasks delegated to them by the supervising attorney including legal research, document preparation, client and witness interviewing, fact investigation, and litigation case management. The 276 hours of classroom training prepares students for entry-level positions as legal assistants by providing them with a working knowledge of the law-related skills necessary to competently assist the supervising attorney, a practical foundation in the ethical and professional principles that govern attorneys and legal assistants, and training to develop a legal vocabulary. These are not Paralegal courses.
Legal Office Procedures
Study of the administrative duties of support personnel in a law office including issues involved in understanding and using social, organizational, and technological systems. Summarize the types of activities legal support personnel perform; explain the basic components of technology systems and software and how such technology fits into the legal process.
Legal Terminology
This course covers the topics of spelling, pronunciation, and definition of legal terms. It also includes an overview of the areas of law and legal professions. Develop a legal vocabulary; and explain fundamental legal concepts, procedures, and terminology.
Legal Ethics & Professional Responsibility
This course covers the ethical and legal responsibilities and duties that a member of the legal profession owes to the public, the court, clients, and other professional colleagues. It also includes a review of the canons, codes, and rules of professional responsibility. Define and properly use terminology related to legal ethics; describe the ethical responsibilities of lawyers and law office.
Beginning Keyboarding
Topics include techniques in machine operation, accuracy and speed, centering and tabulating, and beginning composition at the keyboard. The successful beginning student will be able to type 30 words per minute with reasonable accuracy.
Intermediate Keyboarding
This course is an introduction to word processing terminology, editing functions, formatting, and special text options.
Word Processing Level I
The word processing program allows students to efficiently create and revise professional documents such as letters, reports, memoranda, and resumes. Topics will include saving and retrieving documents, formatting basic business documents, changing fonts, printing, and block functions. The use of spell checker and thesaurus and mouse techniques will also be covered.
Word Processing Level II
Topics include advanced formatting capabilities, search and replace function, use of macros and tables, merging of files, and outlining.
Business Writing
Students learn to develop a mastery of language skills and written communications. Students are encouraged to develop their critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Career Development
This course covers networking, resume preparation, interview skills, Internet sources, and real world know how.
