EFC Home School Connection Classes

Parent registration/Orientation meeting required prior to registration. For all children under the age of 18, parents must complete a DCCCD Minor Student Emergency Health Release form before the class begins. Pick up form in the Continuing Education office during regular business hours. For students under the age of 15, a parent needs to sign student in and out of every class session.

Parent Homeschool Resources - EDUZ 1000   $50.00
Parents, are you considering Homeschooling?  Are you looking for more support and curriculum resources or different teaching methods? Come to a special parents’ course where we will discuss and share: philosophy of home education, Texas and national  laws, homeschool parent support groups, how children learn, learning styles, curriculum resources and teaching methods for specific subjects to facilitate your children’s learning. The facilitator Lisa Coleman is a certified teacher as well as homeschool parent and consultant to other homeschoolers.

Global Warming - GELZ 1000 $130.00
NEW COURSE!!! Global Warming will be taught by Linda Click. Teens can use this as a science or history credit. No textbook. IPCC materials will be used as well as internet websites with current information on this topic. Bring CD for recording information.

Shakespeare Goes To The Movies - ENGZ 1000         $140.00
EXCITING NEW CLASS AND INSTRUCTOR! Students will study English literature: 4 or 5 Shakespearean pieces: Henry V, Othello, Midsummer Night’s Dream, 12th Night or As You Like It, a comedy, tradegy, romance, and an historical piece. The students will read the literature, then watch a movie of the literature. The Shakespearean literature will come alive for the students. Instructor Debbie Scally teaches for Richland College and the Art Institute. Wow! Come be a participant in the fun!

Adobe Photoshop CS 3 (age 15+) - ARTC 1090         $150.00
ST IN DESIGN AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION
Prerequisites: Age 15 or adults
Identifies current skills and knowledge associated with the Photoshop software. A basic introduction to the program. Students will be given an in-depth introduction to the program, learn photo restoration, gain knowledge of scanning, manipulate digital photos and learn basic layering techniques. No prerequisites. Textbook required:. Adobe CS3 Classroom in a Book with CD (ISBN 0321492021).

Flash 2D Animation (age 15+) - ARTC 1090   $150.00
SPECIAL TOPICS IN DESIGN AND VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS
Prerequisites: Minimum age 15 or adults. Basic knowledge of the MAC platform.
Topics addressed will identify current events, skills and knowledge as related to the animation of web images using the software Flash 5.                  

Internet & Web Page for Teens - TNLZ 1000  $130.00
Prerequisites: Introduction to Computers course.
This is a one semester course.  Each person will have his/her own computer to use in the computer lab. The students will get hands-on experience learning how to search the Internet for resources. Student will learn how to develop his/her own web page. Parents of registered students may observe computer class in session.  Each student will need to bring a 3.5” HD diskette.

Research Skills - CRWZ 1000 $130.00
Prerequisites: 9th grade or above
This course is designed to teach students the “ins and outs” of the research process. It will begin with the selection of the topic, then move on to narrowing, note taking, library research, organizing information, drafting, and revising to produce a final product. The students will be guided throughout the entire process and graded along the way. The class will culminate in a typed, fully documented paper with internal notes and a bibliography. Supplies: lined 3x5 cards, pen/pencils, notebook or spiral, and a copy of the textbook.

Writing, Grammar & Speech - DWRZ 1000     $150.00
Beginning level writing, grammar and speech for ages 13-18. Paragraph development and short essays will be the focus of the course. Textbooks required.                  

Spanish IA for Teens - TNLZ 1000      $130.00
The students will learn by listening, watching, practicing, reading and writing conversational Spanish. Fun activities make learning easy and enjoyable. Supplies required include an English/Spanish dictionary and Spanish Is Fun Book 1 softbound textbook, AMSCO School Publications), Spanish & English softbound Dictionary . Spanish IB will be offered second semester.

Spanish IIA for Teens - TNLZ 1000     $130.00
Prerequisites: Spanish IA & IB or competence in first two-thirds of textbook.
This is a 26-hour second year Spanish course. The students will learn by listening, watching, practicing, reading and writing conversational Spanish. Fun activities make learning easy and enjoyable.  Supplies required include an English/Spanish dictionary and Spanish Is Fun Book 1 softbound textbook, AMSCO, last third of book will be covered. Spanish IIB will be offered second semester.

Spanish IIIA for Teens - TNLZ 1000   $130.00
Prerequisites: Spanish I & II or comparable skills. Parent orientation required.
A third year first semester Spanish course. The students will learn by listening, watching, practicing, reading and writing conversational Spanish. Fun activities make learning easy and enjoyable. Supplies required include an  English/Spanish dictionary  and “Spanish Is Fun” Book 2 softbound textbook by AMSCO.

Spanish IVA for Teens - TNLZ 1000   $130.00
Prerequisites: Spanish I &  II & III
A fourth year/first semester Spanish course. The students will learn by listening, watching, practicing, reading and writing conversational Spanish. Fun activities make learning easy and enjoyable. Supplies required include an  English/Spanish dictionary and “Spanish Is Fun“ Books 1 &  2 softbound textbooks,  AMSCO Publishing Company.

Middle School Earth Science - SIEZ 1000        $140.00
Prerequisites: Grades 6 thru 9
This is a one semester full year’s middle school grades 6-9 Earth Science course. Topics covered are Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography, and Astronomy. Textbook is Holt Science & Technology Earth Science. Lab manual is Data Sheets for Lab Book. Lab C321 will also be used.

Middle School Life Science - SIEZ 1000          $140.00
Grades 6,7, and 8. For students preparing for high school Biology. This is a 2 semester hands-on, lab-oriented course covers study and classification of living things, cells, simple organisms, fungi, plants, animals, heredity, ecology, human body systems and human health. Study is required outside of class. Lecture Fridays, 2-3pm in C116; lab Fridays, 3-4pm in S315.

Middle School Chemistry & Physical Science - SIEZ 1000       $140.00
Prerequisites: basic math including decimals
This 2 semester junior high (grades 6-9) chemistry and physical science laboratory course will introduce students to safe, hands-on, laboratory procedures and provide laboratory experiments to assist students in understanding chemistry and physics principles to prepare for high school science classes. Topics to include matter, motion and forces, work and machines, atoms, periodic table, chemical bonding and reactions, compounds and atomic energy, electricity and magnetism, sound and light.  Students will be required to provide some lab supplies including safety goggles for lab.  A supply list will be provided in class. Textbooks required. Labs C320 and S200 will also be used for experiments.

Biology for Teens - SIEZ 1000 $175.00
Prerequisites: Middle school basic chemistry principles
Class meets 2 days each week. Lecture in room and lab on Fridays 4-6pm in S315. Basic life science laboratory course introduces safe laboratory procedures and provides laboratory experiments to assist students in understanding the following topics: First semester covers: scientific method; fundamentals of chemistry; chemistry of living things; cell types, structure, function, metabolism, cell division and reproduction; genetics. Second semester topics include survey of living world, ecosystems and communities; natural selection and adaptation; animal behavior. Science facilitator/instructor will guide the student in locating resources to study life science curriculum and understanding the topics presented by providing laboratory experiments and assignments. Instructor will assign outside reading and practice using handouts, textbooks, or the internet, or taking field trips to area museums. Students required to provide some lab supplies: safety glasses or goggles with side protectors, 3-ring binder with pocket dividers, 1 spiral notebook, 1 packet biology drawing paper. Textbook: Biology of Life (2002), and Lab Manual, Glencoe/McGraw Hill.

Chemistry for Teens - SIEZ 1000         $180.00
Prerequisites: Algebra I and junior high chemistry course
Class meets 2 times per week. Fundamental concepts are presented in lecture and laboratory including the periodic table, atomic structure, chemical bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, states of matter, properties of metals, nonmetals and compounds, acid-base theory, oxidation-reduction and solutions. Descriptive chemistry is emphasized. Students are required to provide: regulation safety goggles, 3”, 3ring binder with 14 dividers, and a scientific calculator. Instructor will assign outside reading and practice using handouts, textbooks, or the Internet. Textbook and book for lab required. Lecture meets on Wednesdays, 9-11 in C116 and lab meets on Fridays, 9-11am in Science bldg, room S200.

PHYS 1405: Conceptual Physics Teens - PHYZ 1000 $156.00
Prerequisites: Algebra I
Concurrent with PHYS 1405 4001; Jay Justice instructor. First semester of non-math Conceptual Physics. Textbooks required.                

Pre-Algebra Math for Teens - DMAZ 1000     $150.00
Class meets 2 days per week. Individualized math assessment and basic math skills curriculum designed for each student’s needs. Math facilitator/instructor will guide student in the completion of as many math objectives as possible by presenting/discussing topics, suggesting outside reading and practice using the textbook. The PLATO math curriculum is also available in the Learning Assistance Center. Supplies include notebook, loose-leaf paper, pencils and erasers. TEXTBOOK: Interactive Arithmetic , H&H Publishing

Algebra I for Teens (fall) - DMAZ 1000           $150.00
Prerequisites: Mastery of basic math fundamentals/Pre-Algebra math.
Class meets 2 days per week. Individualized math assessment and beginning algebra math skills curriculum is designed for each student’s needs. Math facilitator/instructor will guide the student in completing math competencies as student is ready by providing lecture, group work based on use of the textbook. PLATO computerized math curriculum is also available in Learning Assistance Center. Supplies include notebook, loose-leaf paper, pencils and erasers. TEXTBOOK: Introductory Algebra , Prentice Hall/Simon & Schuster)

Algebra II for Teens (fall) - DMAZ 1000          $150.00
Prerequisites: Mastery of basic math fundamentals/Pre-Algebra, and Algebra I math.
Class meets 2 times per week. Individualized math assessment and intermediate algebra math skills curriculum is designed for each student’s needs. Math facilitator/instructor will guide the student in completing math objectives by providing lecture, group work and discussion based on the textbook. The PLATO computerized math curriculum is located in the Learning Assistance Center. Supplies include notebook, loose-leaf paper, pencils and erasers. TEXTBOOK: Interactive Math Intermediate Algebra, Academic Systems

Geometry for Teens (fall) - DMAZ 1000          $150.00
Prerequisites: Mastery of basic math fundamentals/Pre Algebra math.
Class meets 2 days a week. Individualized math assessment and beginning geometry math skills curriculum are designed for each student’s needs. Math facilitator/instructor will guide the student in completing objectives by lecture and group discussion based on the textbook lessons. The computerized PLATO math curriculum is also located in the Learning Assistance Center. Supplies include notebook, loose-leaf paper, pencils and erasers. TEXTBOOK: Geometry, Houghton-Mifflin

Pre-Calculus - DMAZ 1000     $150.00
Prerequisites: Advanced grades 9-12 who have completed Algebra I,  II and Geometry.
Get ready for AP high school and college math courses by studying pre-calculus.

Math Magician Tutoring - DMAZ 1000            $150.00
All ages 7-18. Come visit the math Magician. Show me the questions you don’t understand.  Students need to bring own school textbook, homework, quizzes, and tests and lots of questions. Please bring own pencils and notebook paper.
