Present Progressive

In order to form the progressive tense the appropriate tense of the auxiliary verbs
estar is used along with the present participle (estoy, estás, está, estamos, están)

Action in progress now or in the past. (E.g., Estoy hablando. Estaba hablando)

AR verbs - drop the –ar and add –ando

ER and IR verbs – drop the -er or –ir and add -iendo

hablar (to speak)	comer (to eat)	salir (to go out)
estoy hablando	estoy comiendo	estoy saliendo
estás hablando	estás comiendo	estás saliendo
está hablando	está comiendo	está saliendo
estamos hablando	estamos comiendo	estamos saliendo
están hablando	están comiendo	están saliendo

Ellos están nadando en el mar. They are swimming in the sea. (right now)
Ellos siguen trabajando. They keep on working.
María está cantando y Juan está tocando la guitarra. Maria is singing and Juan is playing the guitar.
Estoy poniendo la mesa. I am setting the table.
Ellos están durmiendo allí. They are sleeping there.

Imperfect Progressive (I was, or used to, be doing something)

nadar (to swim)	vender (to sell)	pedir (to ask)
estaba nadando	estaba vendiendo	estaba pidiendo
estabas nadando	estabas vendiendo	estabas pidiendo
estaba nadando	estaba vendiendo	estaba pidiendo
estábamos nadando*	estábamos vendiendo*	estábamos pidiendo*
estaban nadando	estaban vendiendo	estaban pidiendo

*Note the accent mark on the “we” form only.

Él estaba manejando cuando tuvo el accidente. He was driving when he had the accident.
Ellos estaban distribuyendo algo. They were distributing something.
Yo estaba sirviendo la comida. I was serving the food
El granjero* estaba plantando maíz. The farmer was planting corn.

*In Mexico, a farmer is called granjero.
