The Mesquite police station and Eastfield College police departments are still investigating the sexual assault of a woman that occurred Aug. 28 on Eastfield's jogging trail, according to Eastfield Police Chief Tyler Moore. (more)

Different Handicaps, Similar Struggles

Handicap facilities should be updated, upgraded

Eastfield should take a closer look at some of the problems facing the handicapped, such as the lack of reserved parking spaces for the disabled. The Architectural Barriers Act of 1968 requires all buildings or facilities designed, built, or altered with certain Federal funds to be reconstructed so that people with disabilities can access them. Physically challenged explore campus concerns
Being disabled and going to Eastfield as an employee and student has been a challenge for Rebecca Lindsay and Robert Harvey. Lindsay started Eastfield College in 1970, graduated in 1975, and is now working as a Student Service Tutor. Harvey, 48, is majoring in Computer Aided Drafting and has been in a wheelchair for over 20 years. (more)

Organization
Campus group to start disabilities club; invites new members

People with disabilities can join a new club. "The purpose of the group is to provide help in all areas for the disabled while in college," said Kathyrn Brown, founder of the club. This includes free tutoring, help with learning their way around the campus until the student feels comfortable, as well as having a person that can sign the classes so that a parent or guardian does not have to be right by the student's side. Milam puts professorship on hold for Gulf Coast Hurricane relief effort
William Milam, a professor of autobody technology, is an enlisted National Guardsmen whose unit was called to respond to the Hurricane relief effort. (more)
