Art

Is it, or is it not, art: that is the question

by Boyd Boyd
Reporter

Art Director David Willburn will have a new role in the metroplex art world as the new president of the 500x gallery located at 500 Exposition Avenue, Dallas.

“We are a cooperative, artist-run art space—the oldest in the state,” Willburn said, “As members, we each own a stake in the gallery and are completely responsible for every aspect of its operation.”

500X Gallery is Texas’ oldest artist run cooperative gallery.

“I really believe that 500X has long been the most unique art space in the metroplex,” Willburn said. “I just want to keep it that way.”

Willburn’s desire to keep the art shows at Eastfield fresh and contemporary spills over to the 500x. “My choices for EFC are very similar to those we make regarding 500X members,” Willburn said. “The work not only has to be part of the conversation of our time, but it must reflect both the types of work happening in the studio classrooms and the art scene outside the classroom.”

500x will be celebrating it’s 25th Annual Open Show artists of any type can include their work in an exhibition, with reception for a small fee. Membership to the gallery itself is a bit more exclusive.

“Members are chosen based on the quality of their work,” Willburn said, “Our members are known for producing contemporary, experimental work that is socially, politically and/or personally relevant.”

The most important question for Eastfield is: will this new role take you away from Eastfield?

“Nope! No change at all.” Willburn said. “I’m simply doing more work.”
