Committed -- dedicated to the art of perfecting emotion

by Annetta Brewster
What's Happening editor

Committed is an emo style band that was influenced by Bob Dylan, MXPX and Rancid in the beginnings of their making. They carry a sound similar to Dashboard Confessionals.

Their sound attracts people of all ages. Their name originated from the walls of New Horizon Vineyard, a church at which they once played.

Caleb Turman and Austin Bello were two of the four original members of Committed, along with Drew Bielman and Johnny McAnally.

Turman and Bello met around the age of three. They grew up together in Rowlett and were not interested in music until the age of 12. They started playing in the garage, but at that point they strictly played the electric guitar.

“After Dashboard, it was like their passion really was in acoustic. It was like the electric disappeared,” Tye Turman, Caleb’s father said.

Turman and Bello have also been self-teaching and self-supporting.

“They always said they wanted to start a band,” Turman said.

They went in search for individuals to be members of their band.

Beilman, was a good friend, who became their bass player.

They met McAnally at church, just in time. He played the drums for the worship team. Committed needed a drummer for a Fourth of July Festival that they would be performing in. This event was to occur in two weeks, so they had to write tunes for the drummer.

“Johnny instantly wanted to be part of the band,” Turman said

The band still gets invited to the Fourth of July Festivals every year, specifically for the Garland area. They have also won two out of three Battle of the Bands. On March 25, they were nominated for the Rising Star at the Texas Music Awards.

“They have an abililty to draw people in and get the crowd engaged,” Turman said.

Unfortunately, because of Committed’s acoustic style and issues with school, they have since gone to just to two members, Caleb and Austin.

“I think the most memorable times tend to be when they’re in the recording studio. They’re perfectionist. They get more creative. They have a lot of fun and get real crazy,” Turman said.

Committed as the band had produced two records. The first record was with Naxt Jam Studios in Richardson, and the second was with Dallas Audio Recording. The Dallas Audio Recording studio loved them so much that they provided a lot of work for free.

Caleb and Austin went on tour to Los Angelos this past summer. They both still love their music and get together, but as far as their shows go, they are more selective.

“I remember our first show at The Door. There was so much support,” Turman said.

“Music is the air I breath. If I can’t have music, I’d rather not be alive.”

Basically, music is Caleb’s life. He also gives guitar lessons and builds and sells guitars for a living.

Committed will not die . They still get special requests from various clubs, including The Door.

“I think they’ll always play music,” Turman said.

Final installment in a 3-part series about popular culture.
