Dr. Jesus Carreon has resigned from the position of chancellor of the Dallas County Comminity College District. Just recently, Carreon received criticism from the faculty association concerning his form of leadership. Even after the support given to Carreon by minority leaders, including LULAC National President, Hector Flores, criticism continued.
“Given the environment in our District and the events of the past few
weeks, we understand and support the mutual agreement reached between
the Chancellor and the Board,” said Fred Newbury, president of the faculty association. “Our faculty looks forward to continuing the important work we do with our students.”
The decision was announced at the May meeting of the Board of Trustees. “It has been an honor serving DCCCD as chancellor, and I am proud of the successes that our administration, board of trustees, faculty, staff and students have forged together,” Dr. Carreon said to the Board of Trustees. “For 35 years, I have committed my career to educating students. Now I look forward to exploring new opportunities.”
His resignation will be effective immediately and an interim Chancellor will be appointed until a permanent replacement is chosen. Jerry Prater, chair of the district’s Board of Trustees said that Dr. Wright Lassiter, current president of El Centro College is a clear candidate for the Interim position.
“Whenever a chief executive leaves an organization, it is necessary to regain focus, be clear on priorities, build on the work of the former chief executive, and move forward,” said Dr. Lassiter. “In this instance we must remain committed to serving students and our communities in an exceptional manner.”
According to a press release, in June 2003, Dr. Carreon was named the fifth chancellor of the district.
During his tenure of chancellor, a $450 million dollar project was passed by voters to improve the seven district campuses. “In an effort to provide greater access to higher education in underserved areas of Dallas County, he pioneered a commitment to build five new community education campuses,” Prater added.
Before Dr. Carreon left the board meeting he provided words of support to the students. “You make us all proud every single day with your success, forthrightness and your talent.” Carreon said. “Continue to grow and learn, and for sure serve your fellow students and community.”
