A t-shirt for your thoughts -- students make impressions with clothing statements

by Brittany Erving
Editor-in-Chief

T-shirts. An article of clothing that anyone could wear. It’s what catches the eye and makes each person interesting.

According to Bryan Carr, an arts and science major, t-shirts with funny sayings can make an observer amused.

“A novelty t-shirt is not a style, it’s good for one laugh,” Carr said.

Style is what one finds attractive or intruiguing, believes Carr.

Yet according to him, he has no style.

“I go for comfort,” Carr said. “For a male an outfit is hard, girls have more options.”

18-year-old music major Shannon Maxwell makes her own shirts.

“If it’s a saying that I use a lot, and they don’t have them on t-shirts, then I make it,” she said.

Making her own tees is part of her own style because it makes her stand out.

“It’s a part of me that I haven’t found anywhere,” Maxwell said.

21-year-old business major Billy West thinks that t-shirts are worn because people want attention showered on themselves. “If you’ve seen some of these saying’s on the shirts, you’d think so too,” West said. “A girl wears a shirt that says “hottie” , because she wants that attention attracted on her.”

When Carr spots a girl wearing an interesting t-shirt he tries to read what it says before she catches him staring, because the letterings tend to be right across the chest.

“Guys are idiots,” Carr said. “Males only have enough blood in their body to run one head at the same time.”

“Whenever I wear the shirt that says “rawr” or “shazam”, people will pass me and say it or stop me,” Maxwell said.

People will look at the shirt Carr is wearing and stop too. Though he has never gotten a girlfriend over one of his t-shirts, his female friends do tend to giggle and laugh, he said.

“ I like imaginative stuff,” Carr said, “something intelligent.”

His examples include artwork on a shirt such as animals, or even mystical creatures such as a dragon.

“T-shirts can be easy to afford because they are all over the place,” said Carr.

Maxwell’s tees are especially affordable because she creates her own. It costs her five dollars max.

“I just go and buy a blank shirt and just iron away,” Maxwell said.

According to West, it doesn’t matter where the tee shirt comes from, it’s that the people wearing it are trying to make a statement, for attention.

“I admit I’ve bought some tees with funny sayings,” West said. “ I fall into the majority that wants the attention from strangers or even people I know.”
