Today, thousands of low-income high school students benefit from Upward Bound, one of several TRIO learning programs. Now, its future is in doubt because President George W. Bush wants to use federal funding for another government program. (more)

Eastfield lands Title III $1.8 million federal grant

Eastfield recently received notice from Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison's office that the college won the Department of Education's $1.8 million Title III "Strengthening Institutions Grant" also known as the "President's Grant" that spans five years. (more)

Graduates prepare for ceremony, look to future opportunities

Eastfield celebrates its 34th graduation at the Mesquite Convention Center and graduates are getting ready for the big event. (more)

Junk Food
High school vending machines stock sugary, fattening food, beverages unhealthy for kids

In most area public high schools, vending machines are a common sight. Their snacks and beverages are a source of income for the schools but an area of concern for some. (more)

Status Quo
Mesquite public schools to follow other districts with standard dress code in fall, requires uniforms

The Mesquite Independent School District adopted a standard dress code, which will take effect this fall, and this will apply to the district's secondary school students. The new policy has not been embraced with open arms by many of the students. (more)

SPAR sponsors team building activity to wind up school year

The Spring Fling and Club Fair gave participants a break from school with games, music, door prizes, free food, and club booths during the afternoon of April 14. (more)

Metrosexuality: Today's well-dressed male finds it acceptable

Whether people are familiar with the term or not, chances are they have seen the metrosexual male on the cover of magazines, on television sets, in the streets wearing new products, or walking the halls of Eastfield College. The metrosexual phenomenon is in full stride. (more)

Musical theatre department puts on Guys & Dolls play

For three months the cast and crew of "Guys and Dolls" have been practicing for their big debut. And it is finally here. The cast and crew are very excited for their performance because this "will be a huge musical," said Louise Lerch, drama instructor, "other community colleges have musicals but [they] don't students leading roles." Summer Movie Preview 2005
Darth Vader, Batman, Wonka lead season's must-see films

Darth Vader. Willy Wonka. Martians. Batman. Fantastic Four. Those are some of the characters audiences will be paying to see this summer on the big screen. Whereas last summer seemed to be full of sequels, the summer of 2005 will be full of remakes based on films and television shows of yesteryear. Here is a "Hitchhiker's Guide" profiling some of the most anticipated movies scheduled to invade multiplexes in the coming months. (more)

Volleyball
Volleyball team recruits twelve new players

Coach Stephen Hinds held a press conference in the 'P' building to announce the new players who will be joining the Lady Harvesters volleyball team next year. The new team will consist of 15 players, 12 of which are new recruits; a big jump from last semester's eight players. (more)
