The Big Thicket is a National Preserve in Saratoga, Texas and is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the United States.  The preserve, composed of 86,000 acres, was established in 1974.  Major North American biomes are found here: south-eastern swamps, eastern forests, central plains and southwestern deserts. The preserve is unique because of the number of different species that coexist in this area. Big Thicket was designated as an international biosphere reserve by the United Nations in 1981.

Selected individuals will become part of a very special group that will take part in an innovative experiment that allows community college students to actively participate in basic science programs early in their academic careers. Students are selected for this program based on their interest in the basic sciences, career goals, and their academic potential .

The Big Thicket National Preserve was selected for this project because it is considered by the United Nations as one of the ten areas in the world that needs to be protected because of its biodiversity. The project will involve many local and national organizations in addition to members of Eastfield College participants.

The goal of this project is for students to become involved in ongoing research work. Eastfield College participants work with the National Park Service and others as they conduct the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) of the Big Thicket National Preserve, which is located in the southeastern part of Texas. We assist them in collecting data for future use for Nationals strategic planning related to the environmental problems such as global warming.

HOW TO APPLY :
