STARS Summer Research Program for Students (cc)
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
at Dallas
Some support
for community college students is made possible,
in part, through a STEP grant (No. 0525536) to Eastfield
College
from the National Science Foundation. |

Each summer, the STARS (Science Teacher Access to Resources)
program at UT Southwestern Medical Center offers opportunities
for students to work one-on-one for eight weeks with faculty
research scientists on investigative projects using major scientific
instrumentation in a laboratory setting.
This program provides meaningful experiences in biomedical research
to encourage students to consider careers in the sciences. As
part of the requirements of the program, each student will give
an oral presentation of their experimental results and will
present highlights of their experience to classmates at their
home campus.
A $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation to
Eastfield is funding the $3,000 stipends and college credit.
Through a unique partnership with Eastfield College and the
National Science Foundation STEP grant, UT Southwestern has
opened the program to select community college students. |

Research programs are for UNDERGRADUATE
students only! Students with a valid degree from the U.S. are
not eligible.
Applicants must be currently enrolled at Eastfield College,
pursuing an A.S. degree, field of study degree or transfer program
in science, including mathematics. Criteria used to select candidates
are GPA, essay, letters of recommendation from teachers, and
personal interview.
Students must possess a strong interest in science, a strong
willingness to learn, high level of maturity, and an enjoyment
of the process of discovery. Even students without many
credit hours in the biological sciences may still be selected
to participate if they possess other strong qualities that would
make them a successful participant. |
|
| |
| |
The eight-week program begins in early June and ends in July
each year. This program is a full time (M-F, 8hrs/day)
commitment and will require a considerable amount of time and
effort on the part of the participants, therefore, no other
major activities should be planned for the duration of the program.
A stipend of $3,000 will be paid to each student to compensate
for any possible loss of income that this may cause. In
addition, the student will receive 4 hours of college credit. |
|
| |
| |
Students must provide a completed application form including:
a personal essay, letters of recommendation from two teachers,
and an official copy of his or her most
recent transcript. |
