What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic enrichment service that is offered in traditionally difficult courses. SI services are facilitated by various qualified tutors from a variety of backgrounds including trained student SI Leaders who have successfully completed the course, full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, qualified tutors, graduate, and successful undergraduate students.

Supplemental Instruction is designed to supplement (not replace) class lectures and labs; SI sessions are interactive and collaborative. Students who attend sessions learn to integrate how to learn with what to learn.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a source of academic support program for all of our students.  One of the main goals of SI is to help bridge the gap between high school and colleges (community colleges and universities) for our students so that you will have a smoother transition into higher learning on the way to your chosen career goals. 

SI is available for Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Geology, Physics, and other courses. SIs are supported by faculty, adjunct faculty, qualified tutors, graduate, and successful undergraduate students who use materials to supplement the textbook, and also review lectures and exams used in the actual courses. Supplemental Instruction’s benefits include learning study and time management skills, problem solving techniques, test-taking strategies, teamwork, developing efficient study habits and strategies, and improving academic performance and grades….

As part of SI, we have setup The Science Corner conveniently located on the 2nd floor of the new science building in the mezzanine area.  This particular location was chosen  due to it’s visibility and proximity of course specific study and additional learning resources for students attending science courses at Eastfield College (EFC), not to mention a convenient meeting location for faculty and staff with students.  Students are more likely to seek help for their science courses at a designated location close to their lecture and/or lab classes where they have access to the tools and resources including models, tutors, instructors, course specific and study skills handouts, as well as additional literature… necessary to assist them in completing and succeeding in those courses, in which our Science Corner is appropriately designed and setup.

The Science Corner is an excellent visible Supplemental Instruction service for our students and one in which provides the needed help, tools, personnel, and resources to help facilitate students’ success.  This program is an available and visible resource in close proximity to science labs where students often struggle and who otherwise may drop-out of a course, but rather instead, now have become aware of and seek the help and materials necessary to assist them in completing and excelling in that course and furthermore, preparing them for future courses.  An advantage to providing such a program as the Science Corner to students at Eastfield College is that it would help provide additional study tools and resources to students through pulling together and collaborating with other divisions and departments like the Science & P.E. Division and the Learning Assistance Center.  We look forward to helping optimize students’ learning opportunities and contributing to their success in the classrooms and beyond through this much needed and used program.
