Curriculum and Educational Focus

The CLS utilizes “Creative Curriculum” by Teaching Strategies, Inc. (for more information, you may want to visit www.teachingstrategies.com). This curriculum was specifically selected as the most appropriate fit for our NAEYC-accredited standards, our philosophy and program goals. With our play-based experiential setting, children have daily opportunities to read books, creatively use a variety of art media, explore real and concrete math and science materials, experience music and movement and work alone or together with friends.

Curriculum Goals

The four goal areas for all of our children involve social/emotional development (learning about self and others), physical development (about moving small and large muscle groups), cognitive development (learning about the world, problem solving), and language development (learning about many forms of communication and expression).

The curriculum is designed to:
  • foster positive self-esteem
  • provide opportunities for creative expression
  • support the development of social skills such as taking turns, sharing, cooperation, generosity and empathy
  • stimulate cognitive problem-solving skills with an emphasis on the concepts of cause and effect, classification, serialization, space, time, numbers, shape and colors
  • strengthen communication skills necessary for listening, reading, writing and speaking by providing an environment rich in the practical uses of words and print, with various home languages represented (i.e., Spanish and English)
  • enhance fine-motor and gross-motor skills
  • develop safe and healthy habits in young children with an emphasis on proper hygiene, sound nutrition, exercise and physical care

Curriculum Objectives

Within the framework of the curriculum goals, we also have specific objectives for development that included developing and demonstrating:

  • sense of self
  • responsibility for self and others
  • pro-social behaviors
  • gross motor and fine motor skill (large and small muscle control and movement)
  • learning and problem solving, logical thinking, representation and symbolic thinking
  • listening and speaking, reading and writing

Curriculum Implementation

In support of the philosophy and pursuits of the highest quality care, the curriculum is implemented in a variety of ways, including:

Theme-related lesson plans are designed to facilitate:
  • creative expressions to promote discovery through imagination, exploration and evaluation of ideas
  • language and literacy opportunities designed to encourage children’s comprehension through reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • physical education activities to encourage safe and beneficial health habits in young children with an emphasis on proper hygiene, sound nutrition, exercise and physical care
  • sensory/science experiences supportive of discovery, investigation, and recall to encourage children to process both current and previous experiences toward independent thoughts and ideas
  • imaginative play through real and meaningful, theme-based activities enabling a child to assume various roles and life situations, promoting empathy and problem solving
  • math/manipulative opportunities promoting small muscle coordination counting, sorting supportive of math and reading skills
  • music/movement activities for children to move about and express their feelings through instruments, songs, fingerplays and poems
  • moral-development and character-building concepts of respect, sharing, cooperation, generosity, justice and empathy
Communication methods, including, but not limited to:
  • family email updates
  • daily activity notes
  • parent/teacher conferences
  • postings of events and activities
  • lesson plans and menus sent home
  • daily reports of incidents, accidents and reminders
  • applicable articles/information related to children

Portfolio/development profiles for each child to provide for:
  • ongoing observation and documentation of development, based on developmental milestones
  • lesson plan/activity development related to the interests and needs of children
  • observation and assessment all year
  • on-going assessments of a child as an individual and not based in pressure-based performance or on-demand behaviors
