Substance Abuse Counseling is offered both as a two-year associate degree program and as a one-year certificate program. We also offer a Mental Health/ Substance Abuse Prevention Certificate
The Substance Abuse Counseling Program is designed to prepare qualified and competent graduates to enter the field of human services and to provide specialized services to individuals and their families who are experiencing the affects of substance abuse. Graduates of this program will have the necessary educational requirements to become eligible for testing. Students will gain required work experience as a Counselors-in-Training (C.I.) upon completion of the required hours of classroom instruction. The course DAAC 2366 - Practicum or Field Experience will provide a structured, supervised practicum in off-campus approved laboratory training sites.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, Substance Abuse and Behavioral Disorder Counselors:
Counsel and advise individuals with alcohol, tobacco, drug, or other problems, such as gambling and eating disorders. May counsel individuals, families, or groups or engage in prevention programs. Exclude "Social Workers" (21-1021 through 21-1029), "Psychologists" (19-3031 through 19-3039), and "Mental Health Counselors" (21-1014) providing these services.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE
Students must complete the educational and practicum requirements to become Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). To complete all requirement one must obtain/posses at least an Associates Degree in the Human Service area. The courses offered at Eastfield College meet the requirements set by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
The Eastfield Certificate and Associate of Applied Arts and Sciences degree plans contains additional courses required for college graduation. Obtaining a college certificate and/or degree is a definite employment enhancer and should be pursued if one does not possess a college degree.

Effective Jan. 1, 1992, Senate Bill 837 established the requirement that persons providing substance abuse counseling in the state of Texas must be licensed. In order to provide professional services in the field, one must have the status of Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) or Counselor Intern (CI).
The requirements for licensure as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) follows:
Eastfield's open admission policy allows anyone who is 18 years or older and a high school graduate, or whose high school class has graduated, to gain admission to the college. A completed application form and high school transcripts are required; official transcripts of all previous college work attempted are required of college transfers. Tuition is based on a sliding scale according to the student’s county of residence and number of courses taken.
