Service-Learning is an exciting program at DCCCD that lets you do good for your community while doing good for yourself. How? By applying what you learn in the classroom to
real-world community projects.
A fun way to learn about the Service-Learning program is to stop by a Service-Learning Fair. This exciting student event will help you decide what service project you may want to get involved in.
At the fair you can chat with representatives from the many
community nonprofit agencies and ask any questions you may have.
Here are the dates for the Spring 2016 fairs:
Both volunteering and Service-Learning are valuable. But there are differences.
Here's an example of the difference, courtesy of the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse:
"If school students collect trash out of an urban streambed, they are providing a service to the community as volunteers, a service that is highly valued and important. On the other hand, when school students collect trash from an urban streambed, then analyze what they found and its possible sources so they can share the results with residents of the neighborhood along with suggestions for reducing pollution, they are engaging in Service-Learning."
serve, and you
learn. You go beyond textbook content and engage in problem-solving in the real world. The result: You gain critical-thinking skills that can serve you throughout life.
Are you ready to develop new skills? Explore new career possibilities? How about make a difference in the community?
Sounds like you are ready for the Service-Learning program!
