Those who showed up for a volunteer crew call to clean up the stage, dressing rooms and Performance Hall in early June were in for a big surprise when they were finished.
That’s when Alice Butler, faculty member and director of the theatre program, gave everyone a check.
“They worked hard and were committed to the projects at hand and cared about their other colleagues and the ensemble,” said Butler.
“It was all about their commitment to the ensemble.”
Eighteen of the 20 students showed up for the crew call and were excited about the scholarship, which is called the Alice Butler Award, the oldest scholarship on campus, originating outside the DCCCD in 1977.
On hand to present the scholarship checks were other theatre personnel from the 2015-2016 season: John Moseley, Mike McKee and Valerie Hauss.
“Many of the students sacrificed to be in the theatre program,” said Butler. “They gave up opportunities to earn money outside the college during productions.”
The following students were recipients of the Alice Butler Award:
Emily Elspeth Cross, Erik Collins, Christopher Ospina, Rachel Walters, Ricardo Soto, Sakyiwaa Baah, Jose “Jesus” Rojas, Louden Bongfeldt, Jonathan Kelly, Justin Dillier, Diana Gonzales, Thomas Magre, Valeria De la Cruz, Mario Flores Jr., Alex Niemi, Andres Ramirez, Nicholas Hayes, Mary Ruth Knackstedt, Anthony “Jay” Johnson and Crystal Fiallos.
